3D Printing

Based on a computer drawing, complex structures can be produced from plastics, ceramics, and metals with the help of selective laser melting. Dentures and implants are among the rapidly growing number of applications.

3D printing proves that photonics can transform digital data into physical objects without tools. Here it starts with a digital layer model.

A digital layer corresponds to a layer of metal powder.

The laser beam melts the powder along a path defined by the digital model.

The building platform is lowered with each layer and a new layer of metal powder is applied.

By repeating the process several times, the laser masterfully creates a 3D object.

At the end, the unmelted powder is removed. The actual object is all that remains - in this case a metal tooth.

A very warm thank you to all the companies and institutes that made this publication possible.
