LCD vs OLED

Today, LCD displays dominate the flatscreen market, but in smartphones, organic LEDs (OLEDs) are conquering an increasingly larger market share. OLED displays are thinner, more energy-efficient, and higher in contrast but more expensive to produce.

TThe color displays of smartphones, tablets, and TVs are created by arrays of Red, Green, and Blue RGB pixels.

In liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the RGB layer filters light of a white panel that is always on. This allows for very bright displays, but blacks can be grayish due to leaking background light.

To make the LCD display work, it needs several other electronic and optical layers.

Organic Light Emitting Displays (OLEDs) have an RGB layer that shines by itself. No background illumination. This allows for deeper blacks.

Fewer and thinner layers are needed to make it work, allowing for bendable displays.

LCDs and OLEDs have their pros and cons, which are good to know before spending money.

A very warm thank you to all the companies and institutes that made this publication possible.
