Photonics around the globe

Photonics has developed into a dynamic global business with diverse application markets.

In terms of total market volume, China has taken the global lead. China is particularly strong in newer photonics markets such as information technologies, displays and photovoltaics.

Japan used to be the pioneer in photonics. It still has a large market share in optical components, healthcare and machine applications.

Taiwan is focusing its photonics efforts on LEDs and displays.

Korea is the world champion in the development and manufacture of displays.

Photonics for smart manufacturing and semiconductor production is a particular strength in Europe. It is also strong in many other application markets.

North America has a special expertise in photonics for defence and security, but also in tele­communi­cations. Other appli­cations benefit from these strengths as well.
