In her turn as host of the Academy Awards, Ellen DeGeneres got actor Bradley Cooper to snap a selfie. Ellen posted it to Twitter and it quickly became the most retweeted photo of all time with 3.4 million shares worth a few million dollars.
During the Oscar awards ceremony, Ellen called celebrities to gather around Meryl Streep – who was nominated for a record-breaking 18th time – for a selfie to "break another record".
It took no time at all to collect a mixed bag of movie stars (and Lupita Nyong’o’s brother) for the famous snap.
In total, 615 movies have been made with the actors pictured on the so-called Ellen Selfie.
And most of them have had the honor of thanking the Academy for the prize (though Bradley Cooper has been nominated).
Despite being worth a collective $150 million, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyong'o have the lowest net worths of the group.
In the middle of our rich celebrity pack, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper and Angelina Jolie are individually worth $100 million to $150 million.
With their long careers and megawatt smiles, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt are the richest movie stars that mugged it up for the camera phone.
Ellen DeGeneres has the highest networth of those pictured. Her annual salary for The Ellen Show is a cool $75 million – and there's still income from her turn as Dorie in the "Finding Nemo" movie franchise and side jobs like hosting the Oscars.
But the real profit was the photo itself, which was a paid sponsorship from Samsung. The phone manufacturer paid $20 million for two ads during the ceremony and provided the phone for the stunt.
According to Maurice Levy, the CEO of marketing agency Publicis, the Ellen Selfie bought $800 million to $1 billion worth of publicity for Samsung. Publicis, by the way, handle's the phone maker's international publicity.
